The Volunteer Services department at Caldwell UNC Health Care is staffed by one 36 hour per week director (myself).  My responsibilities include management of approximately 120 active volunteers, 53 junior volunteers some of whom volunteer year round, enrollment and orientation of approximately 300 high school or college job shadowers and interns annually, management of the Gift Gallery (staffed by volunteers Monday-Friday 9 am - 6 pm and Saturday and Sunday 1-4 pm (no paid staff); and  I work extensively with patient/family experiences strategic initiatives within the organization.  Our hospital size is an 104 acute care facility.  Alice Whisnant - Caldwell UNC Health Care

My hospital has a myself, a full time staff Chaplain over our Pastoral Care volunteers and another full time employee that is located at our Hospice House is over the Hospice volunteers in addition to having administrative duties for the Director there.

Mine is a little confusing so hope this helps.  I am a 32 hour a week employee with a 20 hour a week assistant and we cover.... approx. 120 volunteers, gift shop with no paid staff, chaplaincy program, youth program and our Hospital Foundation.

I would be interested to know this as well.  I've often wondered how our volunteer services structure compares to hospitals of similar size.

Does anyone know of or use some sort of suggested ratio of number of volunteers per leader?
