Does anyone have any processes in place in the event a  Chaplain request is made by a COVID-19 patient.  Of course it is required by Joint Commission to provide and document this service, if the request is made.  I am not sure if there are exceptions to that rule.  Currently I am gathering resources for a video conference call between the chaplain and the patient as my first option.  My second option is to screen the chaplain as we would any other visitor with the questions, temperature check,  and then provide him/her with proper training and the PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) attire along with a clinically trained staff member to make sure the equipment is on correctly.  If anyone has any recommendations I welcome your comments.

We have paid chaplains, this is what we are doing:

    • 1)      No room-to-room rounding.  Respond only to referrals from staff/patients/families.
    • 2)      In order to limit amount of PPE utilized, triage isolation precautions rooms by consulting with nurse and offering support via phone initially.
    • 3)      We would continue providing education on Advance Directives, but not proceed with the notary process at this time.  For isolation precaution rooms, have nurse deliver forms and if additional education is needed, it could be done via phone.
    • 4)      Spiritual Care will round to staff for encouragement and support.  We are also working on other creative ideas to offer support.

Currently we have temporarily suspended all volunteers including our clergy volunteers.  We do have a paid Chaplain that is here from 8-5 every day.  I contacted our Chaplain and he said he would follow isolation precautions and visit with a COVID-19 patient.
