Information Desk Volunteer

    In regards to the information desk volunteer.  When the paid person fills in the "unpopular shifts", how does their job description differ from the volunteer  task role in order to be compliant with the labor board requirements?

    We are only staffed by volunteers. When a volunteer is not there (weekends and evenings), a phone is placed on the desk for visitors to call the operator for room numbers.

    We have two primary entrances at Alamance Regional Medical Center, a Visitor Entrance and a Medical Mall entrance.  Currently volunteers staff these desks from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Paid staff cover the Visitor Entrance 2:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Both volunteers and paid staff have access to EPIC and the daily census.  While our volunteers do a good job, my long-term goal is to staff these desks at all times with paid employees.  Bottom line, you will never get the consistency and hence the patient experience with multiple volunteers that you will get with consistent full-time employees.  Just my opinion.  :-)

    We have paid staff covering our Information Desk from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, seven days per week.  Those employees report to Volunteer Services.  Volunteers are available most weekdays to serve as a back-up (never a substitute), provide escorts, make deliveries for the gift shop, etc.

    We have a combination of paid staff and volunteers to keep our information desks covered,. Paid staff cover "unpopular" shifts 5:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. Saturday & Sunday paid staff covers noon until 4 p.m.

    Volunteers do not generate Visitor Badges nor do they access to EPIC records... They are provided a copy of the daily census that is edited for their viewing.

    Our Information Desk utilizes employees both in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough and they are managed by Guest Services.  They are also responsible for Transportation/Discharge at Hillsborough.  We do have volunteers who assist with wayfinding/navigating at Hillsborough, but it isn't a consistent job.

    Hey Alice,

    We use volunteers only - no paid staff.  However our outpatient registration desk in directly across from our Volunteer Information Desk and I know if the volunteers get in a bind the registration staff help.

    We use paid staff because of the extensive duties.  Staff do not just provide direction and room assignment but handle numerous issues that a volunteer could not possible have the depth of knowledge in order to offer the best response.  We do have volunteers to assist the paid staff so they can escort transport people as needed and to cover the desk and phones for meal breaks.   Also our staff at Info Desk are the only ones in the lobby after hours and on weekends.  They assume huge responsibility.

    We use both paid staff and volunteers.  Our paid staff are "Support Associates I" and report to the Director of Volunteer Services and Auxiliary.

    We do not have paid staff at the Front Information Desk.  It is staffed by volunteers only.
